Muscle relaxant injections such as Botulinum Toxin are used cosmetically to remove frown lines and wrinkles in the forehead, nose and eyebrow, and to improve the crows feet area around the eyes.
It’s essential that anyone undergoing these treatments ensures that the practitioner is both licensed and medically qualified to ensure that there are no after effects. For example around the glabellar lines (nose/eyebrow frown lines), some of the muscles are just 1mm wide and often overlap. In order for this treatment to be effective it is essential to inject exactly the right area at the right depth – this requires detailed medical skill and an in-depth knowledge of human anatomy.
Muscle relaxants are administered using a tiny needle with an injection of toxin. The toxin helps to soften the action of several muscles in the face, thereby reducing signs of lines and wrinkles. For deeper lines, temporary dermal fillers should be used. There may be some tenderness at the injection sites after the procedure but this will quickly settle.
Muscle relaxant injections can also be used to treat Hyperhydrosis (excess sweating).
There are a variety of muscle relaxants used by practitioners in the UK. The most common are known as Vistabel and Botox (Botulinum Toxin). The preferred muscle relaxant used by Dr Piper is Botox (Botulinum Toxin).
